Coil

by Sophie Lalazarian

Difficulty: Beginner
The techniques used in this scarf are the knit, purl, and slip stitch.

Gray seems to be the new black on the runway, either in a head-to-toe look, or to anchor this season’s oranges, pinks, and reds. Ombré, too, was seen in a variety of looks, from the grey feathered gradations at Burberry Prorsum to the more youthful street style of DKNY. I wanted to combine the two trends, and headed off to the yarn store to fashion my own stylish color palette. When choosing the yarn for this pattern, it helps to find a yarn shop where you can stare at a wall of Lamb’s Pride, and then, before making your final purchase, walk your yarns to the sunlight in order to get a true measure of their color.

When knitting scarves, I love that snug, hugged feeling, so with Coil, I intentionally did not create a stabilizing border, and used a simple slip stitch mock-rip that likes to curl. As a result, Coil becomes a warm tube, creating a warm double-thick scarf with a fashionable edge. Also, Coil is knit with two strands of yarn held together, on size 17/12mm needles, so it is a quick fun knit.

PATTERN NOTES
MPMK's list of abbreviations.

The scarf is worked entirely in a slip stitch pattern. As the pattern is knitted, the slipped stitches will form ridges in the fabric. The gradation of color is achieved by periodically mixing a darker color into the pattern. Solid portions will always be 6 inches, and mixed portions will always be 12 inches.
