The MetaPostModernKnitting Sock Challenge

Deadline extended to July 1!
We only need sketches, not the finished socks. We welcome all submissions, even if you've never knit a sock or written a pattern before! You can submit as many ideas as you want!

Socks are a rare sight on the runways, and they're rarely highlighted in the fashion magazines. Every now and then they show up, but almost always in a very tiny machine-knit gauge, and they're usually knee-highs or little anklets worn with heels. But in reality we all wear socks, and many of us wear handknit socks. Handknit socks can be cute, pretty, and really cozy, but we want to know: can handknit socks be fashionable?

Show us your fashionable sock ideas, and you could win the yarn to make those socks, plus publication of your pattern in MetaPostModernKnitting. We are not only looking for the most fashionable handknit socks, we also want socks with the most interesting design. Read on for the details.

The goal:
Design your choice of (or both):

1. A fashionable handknit sock for women (we have to limit this one to women... it's not that challenging to make a fashionable sock for men). We aren't going to define fashionable for you. Do some research in the fashion mags, or on style.com, or wherever else you get your fashion inspiration, but we don't want to limit your creativity by telling you what fashionable is.

2. An artsy or unconventional handknit sock for either men or women. We're about more than fashion here at MPMK. We want to promote designs that are avant-garde or unconventional in other ways. We won't define this one either, so that you can let your creativity run wild.

What we want:
Just a sketch of your design and a note about your inspiration. We don't need a swatch or even your gauge at this time, but you should include information about what type of yarn you intend to use and any relevant details about how it might knit up.

Include the following information:
Your name & email address
How would you rate your knitting ability?
Have you ever written a pattern before?
Is your sock intended for spring/summer or fall/winter, or year-round?
If you are submitting for option #2, is your sock intended for men or women?
What yarn and needle size do you intend to use?

The deadline:
Sketches are due on July 1, 2008.

THE PRIZE:
We'll pay for the yarn used to create your socks, up to $30 total. We'll publish your pattern in MPMK, and pay our usual rate for the pattern as well.

If you win:
We will notify the winner as soon as possible. If you win, you will have at least one month to create the socks and write the pattern.

Other details:
We are more interested in your designs than in your ability to knit or write a pattern. Don't let your lack of experience with either deter you from sending a submission. We might be able to help you with all that jazz if you win.

Submit sketches in jpeg format, and include all other information in an email to Robin at robindodge@metapostmodernknitting.com.
