Slouchy Shortrow
by Brittany Wilson
Difficulty: Intermediate. The majority of the hat is knit using the short row technique.
Pattern inspiration: I was in a ski/snowboard shop this winter and there were knits EVERYWHERE. They had a whole wall covered in hats alone. There was one that stood out to me, so much that I almost bought it before realizing "Hey! I'm a knitter! I can make that myself!". The hat reminded me very much of an elf hat. It was rows of stockinette and garter stitch that came to a long point and was gathered on one side so that it bunched into more of a beanie shape. I thought that the same look could be achieved using short rows, then the bunchiness would go away. As I worked on the hat I realized that I probably wouldn't wear an elf hat very often, so I made it into a slouch. It turned out looking more like the mennonite or amish bonnets shown in the Ampop Spring Trend Preview on the MetaPostModernKnitting website.Slouch hats seem to be universally popular, working their way into trends for every season.

MATERIALS
Lion Brand Wool Ease [70% acrylic, 20% wool, 10% acrylic; 162 yd per 70g ball]; 620-501 White Frost; 1 ball.
There are several great things about this yarn. The best is that it is one of only a few Wool Ease colorways that sparkles. I love yarns that sparkle. It is also fairly lightweight and although it has wool in it, it isn't itchy at all. It is also machine washable and very inexpensive. The yarn comes in lots of different colors but I think that substitutions would be really easy. All that you need to make sure of is that the sts per inch gauge is correct since the hat doesn't fit the head snugly the rows per inch doesn't really matter. I think this hat would also look great with a handspun art yarn.
